How to press DTF transfers (settings that last 50+ washes)

Step by step

1. Preheat the press. Set your heat press to 300–315 °F (150–157 °C). For 100% polyester or performance fabric, use 270–285 °F.
2. Pre-press the garment. Press the blank shirt for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. Moisture is the #1 reason transfers don’t stick.
3. Position the transfer. Place the transfer ink-side down on the garment. For a full front on an adult tee, the top of the design sits about 3–4" below the collar.
4. Press. Press for 10–15 seconds at medium to firm pressure. Use a teflon or parchment sheet on top.
5. Peel hot. Wait 2–3 seconds and peel the film in one smooth, low-angle motion while it’s still warm.
6. Repress. Cover with parchment and press again for 5–10 seconds. This sets the ink into the fibers for a softer feel and better durability.

Every press runs a little different. If you have a new press, test on a scrap garment first.

Troubleshooting

The transfer lifts when I peel

Close the press for another 3–5 seconds and try again. The usual causes are low pressure, a cold spot on the platen, or a seam or zipper holding the platen up. Use a pressing pillow on garments with seams.

It cracks after washing

This usually means it was under-pressed, or it wasn’t repressed. Repressing for 5–10 seconds after peeling makes a big difference.

The print looks shiny or plasticky

Repress with a textured cover sheet or kraft paper to get a matte finish.

Dye bleeding on red or dark polyester

Lower the temperature to 270 °F and shorten the time. Performance fabrics can release dye above 285 °F.

Washing instructions for your customers

• Wait 24 hours before the first wash
• Wash inside out, in cold or warm water
• Tumble dry low or hang dry
• Don’t iron directly on the print
